Dubai's shopping scene is extremely vibrant, and known the world over. It flourishes and thrives on diversity, from the traditional spice and gold souks, to enormous malls and retail outlets. Everything from electronics to antiques, and designer clothes to fresh flowers, is available in Dubai's sprawling shopping areas. Everything is duty-free, and most visitors feel obligated to verify this claim, and are pleasantly surprised at its veracity.

There are limitless entertainment options, and you can club all night long to the latest mixes, or experience live Moroccan music and smoke sheesha (water pipes) at cafes. There are plenty of top-notch restaurants in Dubai, and their variety shows you the city's rich cultural mix and diverse population. You can also laze around on Dubai's beaches, or enjoy its world class golf facilities.

Destination Information

ABOUT THE TERRITORY:
DUBAI is a city and emirate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The emirate is located south of the Persian Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula and has the largest population with the second-largest land territory by area of all the emirates, after Abu Dhabi. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the only two emirates to have veto power over critical matters of national importance in the country's legislature. Dubai City is located on the emirate's northern coastline.

Dubai City has emerged as a global city and a business hub. Although Dubai's economy was built on the oil industry, the emirate's model of business drives its economy, with the effect that its main revenues are now from tourism, real estate, and financial services, similar to that of Western countries. Dubai has recently attracted world attention through many innovative large construction projects and sports events. This increased attention has highlighted labour rights and human rights issues concerning its largely South Asian workforce.

RELIGION:
Islam is the official state religion. The Government funds or subsidizes almost 95 percent of Sunni mosques and employs all Sunni imams; approximately 5 percent of Sunni mosques are entirely private, and several large mosques have large private endowments. The government distributes guidance on religious sermons to mosques and imams, whether Sunni or Shi'a, and monitors all sermons for political content. The Shi'a minority is free to worship and maintain its own mosques. All Shi'a mosques are considered private and receive no funds from the government. Within the UAE, Shi'a imams are government-appointed only in Dubai. Shi'a Muslims in Dubai may pursue Shi'a family law cases through a special Shi'a council rather than the Shari'a courts.

Regarding the other religions in Dubai, Dubai has large expatriate communities of Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs and others. Non-Muslim groups can own their own houses of worship, wherein they can practice their religion freely, by requesting a land grant and permission to build a compound. Groups that do not have their own buildings must use the facilities of other religious organizations or worship in private homes. While the UAE doesn't offer any federal-level method of granting official status to religious groups, the individual emirates may exercise autonomy in officially recognizing a particular religious denomination. For instance, Dubai granted legal status to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1993. Dubai is also the only emirate that has Hindu temples and a Sikh Gurdwara.

In early 2001, ground was broken for the construction of several additional churches on a parcel of land in Jebel Ali donated by the government of Dubai to four Protestant congregations and a Roman Catholic congregation. Construction on the first Greek Orthodox Church in Dubai (to be called St. Mary's) began at the end of 2005. The government to the Greek Orthodox community of Dubai also donated the land for the construction of the church.

Financial support to non-Muslim groups from the Dubai government is limited to donate land for the construction of churches and other religious facilities, including cemeteries. They are permitted to raise money from among their congregates and to receive financial support from abroad. Non-Muslim religious groups are permitted to openly advertise group functions, however, proselytizing or distributing religious literature is strictly prohibited under penalty of criminal prosecution, imprisonment, and deportation for engaging in behavior offensive to Islam.

CULTURE:
Dubai culture today is very different from what it used to be a decade or two ago.

The narrow widening creek divides the city into two parts, the Southern part called Bur Dubai has a traditional culture in Dubai and the Northern area, Deira has a busy and bustling culture. The Al Shindagha tunnel that runs under the creek connects the two halves of the city.

The Dubai culture is a cosmopolitan one. With the influx of great number of foreign population which includes, Persians, Indians,Baluchis etc ,the culture in Dubai has become a global one. With Islam as its official religion, Culture in Dubai is essentially a Muslim one but the presence of Hindus, Christians,Sikhs etc cannot be ignored and their presence has left an undeniable mark on the Culture in Dubai.

Like religion, language Culture in Dubai is also diverse and although Arabic is declared to be the official language of Dubai, other languages of the world co-exist with it. The schools are also not biased regarding language and many of them teach foreign languages to the children.

Dubai culture is essentially very colorful and vibrant. The Dubai shopping festival and the Dubai International Film Festival are an integral part of the culture in Dubai.

Another initiative by the Emirate’s dedicated Authority for culture, arts, and heritage - the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the 'Soul of Dubai' project aims at showcasing the dynamic growth of the city as well as its cultural diversity, unique identity and heritage. This will be achieved through a series of short films commissioned by Dubai Culture, that capture the essence and soul of Dubai as seen through the eyes of its people.

CLIMATE:
Weather in Dubai:
Dubai weather is generally hot and humid with a high daily average of sun hours. The Dubai weather is of course determined by its climate.

Dubai Climate:
The Dubai climate is an arid subtropical climate due to Dubai being located within the Northern desert belt.
The skies over Dubai are generally completely blue with little cloud cover. Due to the Dubai weather and its blue skies, Dubai has become a popular destination for astronomers.

Dubai Rainfall:
The weather in Dubai can bring short and irregular rainfall as is typical for the Middle East. Most of the rainfall in Dubai occurs between December and March.

The period between December and March is when the Dubai weather conditions are considered to be the best as the temperature cools down to a more comfortable level.

Nice Dubai Weather:
During the months when Dubai weather is most pleasant is also when tourist arrivals in Dubai increase. The period between December and March each year is considered by the Dubai hotel and travel industry to be the tourism high season of Dubai.

The weather in Dubai during the tourist high season is pleasant with average temperatures of around 24 degrees Celsius during daytime.

During the evenings and nights the temperatures can drop considerably more which is why we do recommend all visitors coming to Dubai during the cooler months to bring warm clothing as well.
Hot Weather in Dubai

The Dubai weather is at its worst during the summer months, which is the period from June until September. Even local Dubai residents try to escape the Dubai weather by taking long holidays abroad.

The Dubai weather conditions create an average daily temperature of over 40 degrees Celsius, which are not very pleasant conditions especially when combined with high levels of humidity.

Dubai weather even leads during the summer months to unbearable seawater temperatures nearly near 40 degrees Celsius.

Dubai spends lots of money on improving their nation and improving and expanding the tourist industry however even all the money of the world can’t change the Dubai climate.

Dubai enjoys an arid subtropical climate, with blue skies and sunshine all year round. The hottest months are between June and September, when temperatures can soar to 113F (45C) and more during the day and humidity levels are very high. Even the sea temperature touches on 104F (40C) during the summer months, and swimming pools at hotels are usually cooled to be refreshing. Temperatures are only slightly more moderate the rest of the year, the coolest time being between December and March. There is very little rainfall in Dubai, but when showers do fall it is mainly in the cooler months.

LANGUAGE:
Language is the most important marker of identity for a country and the National Language in Dubai.
Arabic that speaks a lot about the country and its people. Although according to the Constitution of the country the official language in Dubai is Arabic, yet English is widely spoken and different regional languages are also often used.
Islam being the official religion in Dubai with a vast majority belonging to the Sunni clan. However, Dubai being a cosmopolitan place has several other religions like Hindus, Sikhs, and Christians living together harmoniously.

Naturally, although the official language in Dubai is Arabic, other languages like English, Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam, Bengali and Tagalog are widely spoken.
Languages in Dubai have never been an issue and most of the schools in Dubai teach English along with Arabic. The medium of instruction is usually English but crossing the barrier of language in Dubai there are a number of schools in Dubai that teach foreign languages including French and Russian to children.
The cosmopolitan culture and the importance of the tourism industry are the two most important reasons for the existence of such wide variety of languages in Dubai . Dubai has flourishing tourism industries that require a multi lingual knowledge and therefore languages in Dubai are many.

Arabic is the official language of Dubai, although English is widely spoken and is standard within the business community. Road signs, restaurant menus, maps, guides, currency, websites, and more are written in both languages.

CUISINE OF DUBAI:
Traditional food in Dubai has a unique taste because it has lots of spices and these give it a very rich taste. Most of the spices come from India. That’s why the food in India is quite similar to the food we eat in Dubai.
Most dishes contain things like rice, fish and meat. This is because we live near the sea, which makes it easier for us to get fresh fish from the sea. The meat is usually mutton from either sheep or goats as these are the animals that the Bedouin kept. On special occasions such as weddings and Eids camel may be eaten. Camel’s milk is very good for children as it’s high in fat and contains calcium.

Here are some of the main dishes cooked in Dubai:
Al Machboos is a very popular dish cooked in a large pot. It consists of rice, onions and meat, seasoned with spices, salt and dried lemon called Loomy. This dish is prepared by cooking meat, spices, dried lemon, and seasonings in boiling water until they are very tender. The meat is taken out and the rice is added to the rest of the ingredients and cooked together. Then the meat is returned again to the pot where it is cooked for another one to two hours. Al Machboos is well known and is a favorite throughout the Gulf area.

Al Harees is a very ancient dish that consists of small pieces of meat, wheat, and water. This dish is prepared by putting meat in the pot and adding wheat on top of it and then cooking it in boiling water until the meat is very tender. Then all these ingredients are mixed together and thoroughly beaten until they become like porridge. In the final stage, the pot is surrounded by charcoal and is left to cook overnight. This dish is eaten at any time but particularly during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Al Balaleet is a kind of fine pasta made from eggs, onions, cinnamon, sugar and oil. It is usually eaten for breakfast.
Al Mahshi is roasted lamb stuffed with rice, raisins, onions, eggs and a host of different spices and seasoning. This dish is roasted for 7 to 8 hours and is usually prepared for feasts and weddings.
