CHANDIGARH
The location of Chandigarh (above plains but below hills) brings it a pleasant temperature usually a degree or 2 lower than the surrounding plains. In Chandigarh every road or street intersects every other road/street at 90 degrees which means you can never confuse the way due to curving or bending turns. Some sectors are planned in such a way that opposite sectors always sum up to '13', like sector 1 facing sector 12, sector 2 facing sector 11 and so on. Chandigarh has the largest cover in terms of green area for any Indian city. It varies from 52-54 kilometres.

DALHOUSIE
Located on the western periphery of the Dhauladhar mountain range of the Himalayas, Dalhousie offers glorious views of the contiguous snow-capped peaks and the Chamba valley. This beautiful and quaint hill town with its pristine air, verdant deodars, plentiful pines and regal cottages and villas, will make you fall in love with the place all over again! Spread on and across five hills, with twisty roads and stunning jungle trails that overlook vistas of wooded hills, waterfalls, springs and rivulets, it seems more like an artistic symphony of paint and talent than a real place!

DHARAMSHALA
Known for its scenic beauty, calmness and serenity, Dharamsala is lined with high pine trees, tea gardens, timber yielding trees and unbeatable vies of the Dhauladhar Ranges. Almost 125 years old, Dharamsala, which literally means 'holy refuge' is known as the 'Little Lhasa in India'. McLeod Ganj, about 4 km uphill is the seat of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama.

Home to about 3000 Tibetans, McLeod Ganj is resonant with the sounds of the singing bowls from Buddhist craft shops, the gentle chants emanating from the monasteries and monks garbed in maroon cloaks humming the prayers as they walk relentlessly up and down the beautiful valley. Thongka paintings, woodcarving, metal crafts, music, Tibetan culture and the local Tibetan cuisine colour this beautiful hill town making it even more beautiful.

Destination Information

ABOUT THE TERRITORY:
The Region of Snowy Mountain means HIMACHAL PRADESH is a state in Northern India. It is spread over 21,495 sq mi (55,670 km2), and is bordered by the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir on the north, Punjab on the west and south-west, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh on the south, Uttarakhand on the south-east and by the Tibet Autonomous Region on the east. Himachal Pradesh is known to be abundant in natural beauty.
Himachal Pradesh has one of the highest per capita incomes of any state in India. Due to the abundance of perennial rivers, Himachal also sells hydro electricity to other states such as Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan. The economy of the state is highly dependent on three sources: hydroelectric power, tourism and agriculture.
The erstwhile capital of the princely state of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh has a history that is colorful, fascinating and intriguing. Tour the 81 stone temples that remained mute spectators to historic events and are enamored by this Himalayan state's enchanting history.

Available history records indicate that people from the Indus Valley Civilization inhabited the foothills of this fascinating state chaperoned by snow-capped Himalayan peaks. Great Indian epics such as Ramayana and Mahabharata also mention the existence of this state. The Mountain Rivers that flow through Himachal find a mention in the Rig Veda and it is believed that Himachal was a part of the great Indian Maurya Empire in ancient times. The Pathans, Lodhis, Mughal rulers and British invaders left a considerable impact on the political and social fabric of Himachal Pradesh India.
Nestled in the bosom of glorious Himalayan ranges, Himachal Pradesh is a surreal North West Indian State that enchants you with heavenly locals and enchanting attractions.

RELIGION:
For thousands of years Indians, and especially the Hindus, have looked upon the mighty Himalayas with awe and reverence. For them it is the abode of the gods. There Shiva, the great god of destruction (belonging to the holy Trinity of Creator-Preserver-Destroyer), sat in deep meditation until Parvati, the himalaya-putri (daughter of the mountains), succeeded in winning her love. Temples of Shiva and Parvati abound in these mountains and thousands of pilgrims from the plains make their arduous climb to them each year.

More than 95% of the population of HP is Hindu but Buddhism has also made inroads in to the state thanks to the nearness to Tibet and presence of the Dalai Lama at Dharamsala.

The ashen valleys of Lahaul, Spiti and Kinnaur are made brilliant by the Buddhist way of life.
At times the demarcation between Hinduism and Buddhism is very faint in these hill regions. For example, the rituals of the Kinnauris are a mix Buddhist and Hindu practices. The hundreds of gompas and monasteries here serve as a veritable library for the student of Buddhism. No wonder HP is said to be God’s Own Country.

Rather than in the state most popular Religion is Hinduism. About 98% of the people of this state are Hindus. In terms of population Muslims occupy the second position in the state of Himachal Pradesh according to the recent census. The Muslim population is concentrated in the Chamba, Kangra and Simur. There are also some Buddhists, Sikhs and Christians living in certain pockets of the state.

There is about 1% of the total population who follow the Buddhist Religion. About 0.1% of the people of Himachal Pradesh are Christians. Nearly 1.2% of the total populations of Himachal Pradesh are followers of Sikhism. Majority of the followers of Buddhism occupy the trans- Himalayan region of Kinaur, Spiti, Lahaul and Kulu. The Religious Belief of most of the people in the districts of Simla, Mandi, Sirmur and Kangra is Sikhism.

There are many Religious Sites in Himachal Pradesh dedicated to the Hindu gods and goddesses. Many pilgrims from different parts of the country gather here to visit the Shiva and Parvati temples of this state.

CULTURE:
Himachal was one of the few states that had remained largely untouched by external customs, largely due to its difficult terrain. With the technological advancements the state has changed very rapidly. It is a multireligional, multicultural as well as multilingual state like other Indian states. Some of the most commonly spoken languages include Hindi, Pahari, Dogri, Mandeali Kangri, Gojri, Punjabi and Kinnauri. The caste communities residing in Himachal include the Brahmins, Rajputs, Gujjars, Gaddis, "Grith (choudhary)," Kannets (come under RAJPUTS), Rathis and Kolis. There are also tribal population in the state which mainly comprise, Kinnars, Pangawals, Sulehria, and Lahaulis

The state is well known for its handicrafts. The carpets, leather works, shawls, metal ware, woodwork and paintings are worth appreciating. Pashmina shawl is one of the products that is highly in demand not only in Himachal but all over the country. Himachali caps are also famous art work of the people. Extreme cold winters of Himachal necessitated wool weaving. Nearly every household in Himachal owns a pit-loom. Wool is also considered as pure and is used as a ritual cloth. The well-known woven object is the shawl, ranging from fine pashmina to the coarse desar. Kullu is famous for its shawls with striking patterns and vibrant colours. Kangra and Dharamshala are famous for Kangra miniature paintings.

The culture of Himachal Pradesh is unique and down the ages the people took the pains to preserve their own ethnicity and tradition along with adding the requisite alterations, not loosing the spirit and vibrancy in the manifesting of its cultural elements.

CLIMATE:

The abundant flowers in the Kinnaur Valley are a treat to the eyes. Its tranquility and charm also lure honeymooners during winter.

Though Hindi is the official language of the state, but there are many other languages that are spoken in the state. Among them the prime languages of Himachal Pradesh are the Punjabi and Pahari, Dogri and Kangri. Gujarathi is also spoken in the western parts of the state.
Pahari is one of the most common and most spoken languages of Himachal Pradesh. It is derived from the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit. Nearly all the basic words in the language are taken from Sanskrit. Many of the words are also taken from another ancient language of Prakrit. Due to the settlement of many different types of tribes, different tribal languages have also flourished in the state. The languages may also differ from region to region. There are many other regional languages like Kinnauri, Lahauli, Chambyali, Pangwali, which are spoken in the state.

Punjabi language:

Punjabi is a language that traces its roots to the Indo-Aryan languages, and is spoken mainly by the Punjabi community in India and Pakistan and all around the world. In Himachal Pradesh also Punjabi is being spoken, and the credit goes to the Punjabi speaking tribal people who went on to inhabit the central and western parts of the state.
Pahari language:

The Pahari language is basically spoken in the hilly regions of northern India. There are a number of different types of dialects that come under this language. The Pahari language or the Pahari languages as they are known, is a group of similar dialects that are spoken at the foothills of the Himalayan ranges, in the northern parts of India and Nepal. The Pahari languages are classified under central Pahari, eastern Pahari and western Pahari. The language has one more classification known as Garhwali. Languages like Dogri and Gaddi are classified as Garhwali.

CUISINE OF HIMACHAL PRADESH:
The day-to-day food of Himachalis is very similar to the rest of the north India. They too have lentil, broth, rice, vegetables and bread. Some of the specialties of Himachal include Pateer, Chouck, Bhagjery, jhoul, Patrode, Sidku, Beduan, Chutney, Madra, Khatti Dal, Mahni, Khatta and Ambua, Madra, Pahari Aloo and Pahari Murgh.
The preferred taste in Himachal varies from region to region. Non-vegetarian food, with a generous dose of spices like cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and red chillies, is very much the norm. The average Himachal kitchen churns out all sorts of meat, lentil and cereal preparations.
While the everyday meal is the usual dal-chawal-subzi-roti (the common north Indian meal of rice, lentil broth, dish of vegetables and bread), special dishes are cooked during festive occasions.

Famous Sidu is a kind of bread made from wheat flour. It is kneaded with yeast and the dough is allowed to rise for 4-5 hours. With a stuffing of fat it is first browned over a slow fire and then steamed. Sidu is normally eaten with ghee (clarified butter), dal (lentil broth) or mutton. In many parts of the state, ankalos made of rice flour are a festive dish. In the dry Lahaul-Spiti valley, the leaves of buckwheat are mixed with wheat flour and made into cakes called aktori. Patande (a sort of pancake) is a specialty in the Sirmaur area.
Dham is cooked only by botis (a particular caste of Brahmins who are hereditary chefs). A preparation for this elaborate mid-day meal begins the night before. It is served in courses on epattalsi or leaf plates. In the Chamba region, the typical menu for a dham would start with rice, moong dal (green lentil broth) and a madrah of rajma (red kidney beans) cooked in yoghurt. This is followed by boor ki kari and a dark lentil (mash dal). Topped by khatta (sweet and sour sauce) made of tamarind and gur (jaggery), the dham ends with the mittha (dessert) – sweet rice, liberally mixed with raisins and dry fruit.

The Superior Deluxe room is exactly the same as the Deluxe room in terms of size and amenities and has an additional bathtub in the bathroom. The topmost floor of the building houses the Suite room(s) and has an all wood decor. The ceiling is designer - has slant panes and the walls are also wooden. The Suite has a tree house/ hut like appeal and looks very cute. The floor is carpeted here and has an interesting cupboard style. There are 3 cabinets all of varying sizes to store shoes and clothes separately. This has been created in sync with the slanting ceiling - a good creative attempt. Facilities in the Suite includes satellite television, intercom, dressing table and an attached bathroom with a bathtub with running hot and cold water supply and amenities like soap, shampoo, towels, bathroom slippers and toilet paper. During winters, the hotel also provides heaters inside the rooms at an additional charge.
