SRINAGAR
The picturesque Srinagar, the Summer Capital of Jammu and Kashmir, is a city of lakes and gardens. It possesses the quiet calm of someone who has seen too much of life. Since its history began - some date it back to the 3rd century BC-it has witnessed opulence and horror.

Shaken to destruction by an earthquake and washed away by floods in recent times, the city picked up the pieces. Its mystique was not missed by the powerful and the wise. Many rulers left a trace of their rule in Srinagar: Asoka, Vikramaditya, the Moghuls and the Dogra. The echo of the Sufi saints's wisdom still reverberates in Srinagar if you are willing to listen.

Urs at Sufi shrines revisit the saints' teachings on their death anniversary. Rozabal Shrine brings people to its door out of curiosity. It is said to be the tomb of Jesus Christ, a controversial claim. A Shiva temple on the Shankaracharya Hill is where Adi Shankaracharya meditated.

It is easy to forget the harsh reality in the enchanting gardens. The Mughal Gardens are like paradise recreated: Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh and Chashma Shahi Gardens. They are all designed to give you a magnificent view of Dal Lake.

PAHALGAM
From the high green mountains of the Himalayan range to the great Lidder River, the sheer grandeur of Pahalgam blows you away. It sits pretty right where the Aaru and Sheshnag rivers meet and is guarded by fir covered mountains chequered with white peaks.

Perched around 8200 ft above sea level, Pahalgam offers world class rafting, mountaineering, sledging, camping, skiing, trekking and hiking expeditions. Get set to go on a rollicking high-altitude adventure along the balmy Lidderwat Valley, Kolohoi Glacier and Sonmarg Valley. Let's take you to the beautiful valleys of Pahalgam.

Destination Information

ABOUT THE TERRITORY:
Kashmir is the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent. The Kashmir region became an important center of Hinduism and later of Buddhism; later still, in the ninth century, Kashmir Shaivism arose. In 1349, Shah Mir became the first Muslim ruler of Kashmir and inaugurated the Salatin-i-Kashmir or Swati dynasty. For the next five centuries, Muslim monarchs ruled Kashmir, including the Mughals, who ruled from 1526 until 1751, then the Afghan Durrani Empire that ruled from 1747 until 1820. That year, the Sikhs under Ranjit Singh, annexed Kashmir. In 1846, upon the purchase of the region from the British under the Treaty of Amritsar, the Dogras—under Gulab Singh—became the new rulers. Dogra Rule, under the paramountcy (or tutelage) of the British Crown, lasted until 1947, when the former princely sta tan, and the People's Republic of China became a disputed territory, now administered by three countries: India, Pakistan and the People's Republic of China.SRINAGAR is the capital of Jammu & Kashmir.

Kashmir's economy is centered on agriculture. Traditionally the staple crop of the valley was rice, which formed the chief food of the people. In addition, Indian corn, wheat, barley and oats were also grown. Given its temperate climate, it is suited for crops like asparagus, artichoke, seakale, broad beans, scarlet runners, beetroot, cauliflower and cabbage. Fruit trees are common in the valley, and the cultivated orchards yield pears, apples, peaches, and cherries. The chief trees are deodar, firs and pines, chenar or plane, maple, birch and walnut, apple, cherry.

Kashmir became known worldwide when Cashmere wool was exported to other regions and nations (exports have ceased due to decreased abundance of the cashmere goat and increased competition from China). Kashmir’s are well adept at knitting and making Pashmina shawls, silk carpets, rugs, kurtas, and pottery. Saffron, too, is grown in Kashmir. Efforts are on to export the naturally grown fruits and vegetables as organic foods mainly to the Middle East. Srinagar is known for its silverwork, papier-mache, woodcarving, and the weaving of silk.

The Indian-administered portion of Kashmir is believed to have potentially rich rocks containing hydrocarbon reserves.

RELIGION:
Three major faiths are clearly dominant in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir. In terms of total population, Islam clearly dominates the Kashmir valley. You will find the valley brimming with Muslim population. In addition to that Hinduism and Buddhism also constitute a part of the religions in Kashmir. The followers of Buddhism inhabit the Ladakh area of Jammu and Kashmir State.
Islam:
The predominant religion of Kashmir valley is Islam. Muslims constitute more than 90% of the total population of Jammu and Kashmir. Even in Jammu, Kargil and some other districts, Islam forms a substantial part of the population. The Muslims are broadly divided into two sects - the Sunnis and the Shias.
Hinduism:
Hinduism is the second most dominant faith in Kashmir. The majority of Hindus consist of Kashmiri Pandits and Gujjars. Majority of the Kashmiri Pandits migrated from the Kashmir valley because of the constant terror threat and are now present in a minority. On the other hand, many Gujjars got converted to Islam.
Buddhism:
Buddhist population is mainly found in the Ladakh region of Kashmir, where it predominates. In the main Kashmir valley, however, Buddhists are present in a negligible numbers.

CULTURE:
Like its scenic beauty, Kashmir valley is even famous for its cultural heritage. The valley of Kashmir is very rich as far as different aspects of its culture is concerned. Right through ages, it has adopted and assimilated components of various civilizations and religions. The amalgamation of Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist Philosophies has added colour and fragrance to the Kashmiri culture resulting into a composite culture based on humanism, secularisum and tolerance. Besides, it has borrowed certain features from its adjacent regions like Central Asia also. To sum up, the valley of Kashmir has a unique and peculiar culture, which is reflected in different walks of life. Some aspects in believers of Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism inhabit Kashmir. A few Christians and Buddhists also live there. Islam is the dominant religion in Kashmir Valley. There are different opinions regarding the spread of Islam in the valley. Some historians are of the view that a Syrian by the name of Hamim bin Sam was the first Muslim to settle in Kashmir. He came to Kashmir with Raja Dahir’s son Jasiya, after the latter fled to Delhi when Muhammed Bin Qasim defeated Dahir.

CLIMATE:
Kashmir Climate Conditions:
Kashmir has erratic climatic conditions. All around the state of Jammu & Kashmir the climate changes along with various geographical conditions. Near the middle mountains winter is cold and lasts for a long time. The Kashmir monsoon brings a lot of rain at this part of the region. In the higher mountain regions around the valley, there is often a snowfall. Summer in Kashmir is mild and much shorter than winter. Altogether the weather of Kashmir is either very chilling or pleasant throughout the year.

Kashmir Weather:
In the valley of Kashmir, winter is chilling cold and lasts from November to March. There are strong wind, snowfall and rainfall during this period. Warmer weather starts in the middle of March and lasts till the end of July, but at this period of the year there is a lot of rain leading to landslides.

As the state of Jammu & Kashmir is dotted with lakes and waterways, the atmosphere becomes damp, which covers the valley with a mist & fog.

The climate of J&K is just opposite from the rest of India. While the mercury reaches the breaking point in the foothills in the summer time, people of Ladakh and Kashmir wait for the snow to melt for there daily normal use. From October onwards, Jammu becomes a much more pleasant destination. However, the best time to enjoy the beautiful valley of Kashmir and the adventures of Ladakh region is between the months of May and September.

The Seasons in Jammu & Kashmir:
The seasons are marked with sudden change and the year is divided into six seasons of two months each.

  • Spring March 15 to May 15.
  • Summer May 15 to July 15.

LANGUAGE:
The Kashmiri language is one of the 22 scheduled languages of India, and is a part of the Sixth Schedule in the constitution of the Jammu and Kashmir. Along with other regional languages mentioned in the Sixth Schedule, as well as Hindi and Urdu, the Kashmiri language is to be developed in the state. Some Kashmiri speakers frequently use Hindi as a second language, though the most frequently used second language is Urdu. Since November 2008, the Kashmiri language has been made a compulsory subject in all schools in the Valley up to the secondary level.
There are three orthographical systems used to write the Kashmiri language—these are the Sharada script, the Devanagari script and the Perso-Arabic script; additionally, due to internet technology, the Roman script is sometimes used to write Kashmiri, especially online. The Kashmiri language was traditionally written in the Sharada script after the 8th Century A.D.This script however, is not in common use today, except for religious ceremonies of the Kashmiri Pundits. However, today, it is written in Devanagari script and Perso-Arabic script (with some modifications). Among languages written in the Perso-Arabic script, Kashmiri is one of the very few which regularly indicates all vowel sounds. This script has been in vogue since the Muslim conquest in India and has been used by the people for centuries, in the Kashmir Valley. However, today, the Kashmiri Perso-Arabic script has come to be associated with Kashmiri Muslims, while the Kashmiri Devanagari script, has come to be associated with the Kashmiri Hindu community, who employ the latter script.

CUISINE OF KASHMIR:
Kashmiri cuisine has evolved over hundreds of years and is highly influenced by the food of the Kashmiri Buddhists and Pandits, the Hindu community of the valley. Apart from this, it is also strongly influenced by the cuisines of Central Asia, Persia and the North India Plains.
Mutton, being the most notable ingredient in Kashmiri cuisine has more than 30 variety of dishes.
Kashmiri Pandit cuisine is elaborate and gives out the ethnic identity of the Pandits. The food is usually prepared in lots of yoghurt, oil and spices. Mostly Chicken, Mutton, Onions, garlic and tomatoes are avoided in the preparation of the dish.
Typical Vegetarian dishes from the cuisine of Kashmiri Pandits include :
Ladyar Tsaman (Indian cheese in turmeric), Veth tsaman (Indian cheese cooked in oil and kashmiri spices), Dama Oluv (potatoes), Nadeir yakhean (lotus stem), Choek vangan, Nadier Palak and the Razmah goagji
The non-vegetarian dishes are similar to the Muslim dishes but vary in taste as its influenced by the Pakistani Muslim food. They include dishes like Rogan Josh, Chamani Qaliyan, Matshgand, Kabargah,Gushtaba, Aab Gosht, Shab Deg Kashmiri Yakhni and Gaad (fish cooked with nadur or monju or mooli)
Kashmiri delicacies are a treat with use of dry fruits, especially in the preparation of curries. Kashmiris use lots of ghee to cook the dish but nowadays families have started using mustard oil as an alternative to avoid the intake of high fat. Kashmiri rice is very aromatic and light.
