Kochi (colonial name Cochin) is a vibrant city situated on the south-west coast of the Indian peninsula in the breathtakingly scenic and prosperous state of Kerala, hailed as 'God's Own Country'. Its strategic importance over the centuries is underlined by the sobriquet Queen of the Arabian Sea. Informally, Cochin is also referred to as the Gateway to Kerala. This lovely seaside city is flanked by the Western Ghats on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west. Its proximity to the equator, the sea and the mountains provide a rich experience of a moderate equatorial climate. Kochi is the arguably the ideal starting point for exploring the unfathomable diversity and beauty of Kerala, rated in the top three tourist destinations by the World Travel & Tourism Council and featured in National Geographic Traveler's '50 greatest places of a lifetime'.
A Hundred Thousand Islands' or Lakshadweep is an archipelago consisting of 36 islands, 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks in the Arabian Sea. Scattered on the emerald blue waters of the Arabian Sea and bordered by exquisite coral reefs, Lakshdweep is a paradise for naturalists and water sports lovers. Here, there is no space for the complicated life that most of us live. Everything is a sea of serenity, of peace and tranquility. Much like the pale colored water, everything is as it is, here. Whether it's the dolphins dancing in the sea, the turtles basking in the sun, the simple folks grilling the fresh catch from the sea or excited tourists enjoying their stunt at Scuba Diving, Yachting, Pedal boating, Kayaking, Canoeing and Snorkeling, life in Lakshadweep remains the same - calm and beautiful.
Agatti Island Beach Resort presents a breath-taking spectacle of sparkling coral reefs, turquoise blue lagoons, silvery beaches and lush green coconut palms. Here time stands still in the mesmerizing beauty of a virgin nature. It is one of world's most spectacular tropical islands untouched by the tourist rush.

The emerald green idyllic palm clad islands of Agatti; the long white beaches; the multi-hued shallow, placid lagoon with its myriad life forms; the diamond surf formed by waves striking the reef and the deep blue of the Arabian sea are all feasts to the eye and an experience that will last a lifetime. Perhaps it is one of the very few places where all shades of blue, green and white are present. In fact, the islands and the coral reefs are so varied in its physical form and appearance that no two would look alike. Destination Information

LAKHSADWEEP also known as the Laccadive Islands is a group of islands in the Laccadive Sea, 200 to 440 km off the coast of the South West Indian state of Kerala. The islands form the smallest Union Territory of India. The total land area is 11 sq mi or 32 km². Ten of the islands are inhabited. Lakshadweep is the northern part of the erstwhile Lakshadweepa. The islands are the northernmost among the Lakshadweep-Maldives-Chagos group of islands, which are actually the tops of a vast undersea mountain range, in the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea.
The land area is 32 square kilometers (12 sq mi); the lagoon area is about 4,200 square kilometers (1,600 sq mi), the territorial waters area is 20,000 square kilometers (7,700 sq mi) and the economic zone area is 400,000 square kilometers (150,000 sq mi).
Lakshadweep is an archipelago of twelve atolls, three reefs and five submerged banks, with a total of about thirty-nine islands and islets. The reefs are in fact also atolls, although mostly submerged, with only small-unvegetated sand cays above the high water mark. The submerged banks are sunken atolls. Almost all the atolls have a northeast-southwest orientation with the islands lying on the eastern rim, and a mostly submerged reef on the western rim, enclosing a lagoon. It has 10 inhabited islands, 17 uninhabited islands, attached islets, 4 newly formed islets and 5 submerged reefs.

The main islands are Kavaratti (where the capital city, Kavaratti, is located), Agatti, Minicoy, and Amini. The total population of the territory was 60,595 according to the 2001 census. Agatti has an airport where there are direct flights from Kochi, Kerala or Ernakulam (Cochin). Tourists need a permit to visit the islands; foreign nationals are not permitted to visit certain islands. Consumption of alcohol is not permitted in the islands except on Bangaram Island.

People here are ethnically similar to that of the people of Kerala. A special feature of the social set up of the territory is the division of the population into various classes, viz. Koyas, Malmis and Malacheris in Laccadive group of Islands; Manikfans, Thakurs and Raveries in Minicoy and Tarwad, Tanakam-pranaver, Kudiatis and Melacheris in Amini.
The Koyas were the chief land owning class of the society. Formerly they were known as Tarawadis or the Karnavar class. Originally, the class consisted of the Principal families of Tarwads known as Caravans who sat as jurors in the community Panchayats. They regarded themselves superior to others and hated alliance with others. In earlier days, the Caravans were the real masters of the land.
The Malmis are the sailors. The word Malmi is connected with the signs of ways. In the past the Malmis were the tenants of the Koyas and they served as sailors under them and exported their produce in the odam. Piloting of vessels is not the only privilege of this class and anybody who acquired mastery over the nautical table is as competent as a successful Malmi.
The Melacheris were the original labour class of the islands and formed the major part of the population of Amini of the Laccadive Group of islands. The people of Kadmat, Kiltan, Chetlat and Bitra are all Melacheris who have migrated from Amini and from the coast. Their traditional occupation is to collect coconut tree nuts and tap neerah, the sweet toddy. It appears that the name has its origin in their traditional place of residence on the western side of the island. Mala means West, Cheri denotes a village.
Among the class system of Minicoy, the Manikfans are considered to be of the highest class. They alone owned private property and were the leisured class. The Thakrufans were the sailors who mainly piloted sailing vessels. Takrus worked in the boats during voyages while the Raveris were the Labourers. Women of the four classes are known as Manikka, Beefan, Beebee and Kambilo respectively. In between Thakrufan and Thakru, there is a sub-caste known as Bebe.

Lakhshadweep Culture presents a pulsating forum of diversified customs and rituals. Predominantly inhabited by followers of Islamic religion, the people of Laskshadweep celebrate many folk festivals by performing the popular Dance form Lava. Adding color to the cultural vibrancy of the island are the two art variations – Parichakali and Kolkali.

A confluence of 36 incredibly ecstatic islands, Lakshadweep earns a major share of its revenue through the tourism industry. The cultural reserve of the island is quite enviable, as it owes its origin to a very old time period. The historical records states that in the wee hours of seventh century, Lakshadweep and its culture was very much in the forefront.

It is believed that Hazrat Ubaidullah, the prophet and founder of Islam in Lakshadweep, inspired the Hindu people of the ancient island to convert their religion. This way the popularity of Islam took place in Lakshadweep and today each and every person of the place religiously follow the traditions of Muslim sects.

Since Lakshadweep is situated near one of the beautiful states of India – Kerala – it is but obvious that there are enough evidences of the cultural influence of that place are found in abundance. For one, the main diet of Lakhshadweep is rice that is also the same in Kerala.
