 Destination
Mauritius:
Mauritius bowls you over with its beaches of white sand and sapphire water, tropical forests and myriad flowers, the ghost of the extinct Dodo still alive in souvenirs, and a history that has resulted in the synthesis of many cultures. The Dutch, French, English and even pirates traversed this African island on the Indian Ocean. This is good news for gourmands who can get their fill of African, Chinese, French and Indian cuisine.

If a vision of crystal clear water, white beaches and palms spring to mind when you hear about this island, you are right. There are many beautiful beaches and the islands, Ile Aux Cerfs and Rodrigues, are also quite close.

But Mauritius is more than that. The duty-free shopping scene is splendid with t-shirts, Vanilla Tea and ship models being great finds. The food is delightful. The cultures of all those who came by the island makes up the cuisine. There's Dhol Puri, Bacon and Eggs, Rougaille and Biryani. Sugarcane Rum is the drink of choice and some of the local brands of beers are pretty good.

The country is packed with so many sights and experiences that you might have to keep coming back to get to know it better. Many Bollywood movies are shot here though it is only its spectacular locales that are emphasized. Baazigar, Golmaal, Josh and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai were shot in the Republic of Mauritius.

There are exotic trees like Talipot palm, and birds like Pink Pigeons, Red Fodys and snowy White Java Sparrows that call Mauritius their home. The intricate nests of bright yellow Weaver Birds hanging on the tip of slender branches are common. Anthuriums and many other flowers bloom on this island. There are lilies that are a different colour every morning.

The folks here miss the Dodo, a bird that couldn't fly and looks like a cross between a Turkey and a Vulture. You will see the skeleton of the now extinct Dodo at a museum. Museums for stamps, photographs, relics from battles and even one that gives you lessons in sugarcane processes are found around Port Louis.

Adventurers can look forward to a packed calendar. Snorkelling, scuba diving around the coral reef, quad biking, trekking volcanoes, zip lining, sky diving are but a few sports on offer. Walk underwater and walk with the lions, both unique experiences to be had in Mauritius.

Temples, churches and mosques engage you with their architecture and history, while a sega performance will have you grooving to its measured rhythms. Clap along with the musicians as the local women sway to it in fabulous flowing skirts.

Enjoy rum and sugar tasting at a sugar factory. And check out the waterfalls. Be mesmerised by the volcanic soil of seven shades. Look around the pyramids and disappear into the ocean in a submarine to blow kisses at colourful fish that are beautiful in their strangeness and promise to visit them again.

Destination Information

ABOUT THE TERRITORY:
The Republic of Mauritius is an island nation off the southeast coast of the African continent in the southwest Indian Ocean, about 900 kilometers (560 mi) east of Madagascar. In addition to the island of Mauritius, the Republic includes the islands of Cargados Carajos, Rodrigues and the Agalega Islands. Mauritius Island is part of the Mascarene Islands, with the French island of Réunion 200 km (120 mi) to the southwest and the island of Rodrigues 570 km (350 mi) to the northeast. Mauritius's area is 2040 km2; its capital city is Port Louis.

The island of Mauritius is renowned for having been the only known home of the dodo. This bird was an easy prey to settlers due to its weight and inability to fly, and became extinct fewer than eighty years after the initial European colonization.

Tourism in Mauritius tends to be high-end tourism, with a focus on coastal resorts and diving. Mauritius had about 18,000 visitors in 1970. Between 1985 and 2000 the size of its tourism sector, measured by the increase in tourist arrivals, grew by approximately 340%. Tourist arrivals in 2004 were almost 720,000.In 2008, 970 482 tourist came to Mauritius. Tourism created 30,000 full time jobs. Tourists are primarily European, mainly French and British. Mauritius tends to be a high cost tourist destination. To promote up-market tourism, charter flights have been banned, the resort hotels have been built to high standards and there are high standards of cuisine and service. There are direct flights from Britain and South Africa.
The amount of resorts clustered in parts of the coastline is increasing, despite concerns about pollution and damage to coral reefs. Policy in the country has generally been to regulate contact between Mauritians society and tourists because of concerns about cultural and social problems.

RELIGION:
The forebears of the various ethnic groups composing Mauritius society arrived as settlers, slaves, indentured laborers, and immigrants. Although the country's past contains dark chapters of inequality and exploitation, modern Mauritian history has been remarkable for its relatively smooth and peaceful transition from colonial rule and the rule of large plantation owners to multiparty democracy.

The 1968 constitution recognized four population categories: Hindus, Muslims, Sino-Mauritians, and the general population. According to a 1989 estimate, of a total population of 1,080,000, Hindus constituted about 52 percent (559,440); the general population, about 29 percent (309,960); Muslims, about 16 percent (179,280); and Sino-Mauritians, about 3 percent (31,320).

Hindus make up 52%, Roman Catholic 27.5 %, other Christians 8.6%, Muslims 16.6% and non-religious 0.4% while other religions up to 2.5%, and an additional 0.3% didn't specify their religious beliefs.
Most Franco-Mauritians and Mauritian Creoles are Christian. The Hindu population and most of the Muslim population is of South Asian origins. However, many Mauritians are of mixed descent; this is due to the fact that many of the slaves were mixed up causing many 'mixed races'. These languages are still preserved through the existence of different socio-cultural organizations and with the school systems obliging primary schools' students to study an oriental language. Minorities of people are of Chinese descent, many of which have embraced Christianity, following mainly Roman Catholicism. Some follow Buddhism and Confucian traditions.

CULTURE:
The culture of Mauritius is a blend of Indian, African, Chinese and European influences. It is common for a combination of cuisines to form part of the same meal.

The island of Mauritius was apparently uninhabited until 1638. It was then that the Dutch, under the Dutch East India Company, made their first attempt to colonize the land, named after the prince of Denmark, Maurice of Nassau. The people of Mauritius are descendants of European (mostly French) settlers, the Franco-Mauritians; African slaves and Creoles, the Afro-Mauritians; Chinese traders, the Sino-Maurtians; and Indian laborers, the Indo-Mauritians. Such cultural diversity and geographic isolation have led to a nationalized sense of pride. There is unity in being a Mauritian despite not having a shared language and customs. For this reason Mauritius is often considered a global example of successful cultural integration.

The production of RUM, which is made from sugar cane, is widespread on the island. The Dutch first introduced sugarcane to Mauritius in 1638. The Dutch mainly cultivated sugarcane for the production of "ARRACK", a precursor to rum. However, it was during the French and British administrations that sugar production was fully exploited. Pierre Charles François Harel was the first to propose the concept of local distillation of rum in Mauritius, in 1850. The Phoenix Brewery also produces Beer on the Island

The island has also given rise to a diversified literature in French, English and Creole. Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio, the 2008 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, is of Franco-Mauritian origin and lives on the island for part of each year.
In Mauritius, the following festivals — Diwali, Mahashivratri, Christmas, Ugadi, Cavadee, Chinese New Year, Père Laval, and Eid Al-Fitr — are celebrated
Recreational activities in Mauritius are quite varied to support the local tourism industry. Water sports are facilitated as the island is surrounded with coral reef, providing plenty of relatively shallow and calm water. Activities such as deep sea fishing, surfing, windsurfing, water-skiing, cruising in yachts and even submarines are some of the many water based recreations available. Although it seldom breaks, Tamarin Bay is one of the world's most famous surfing spots. Land-based leisure activities include golf, tennis, skiing, sky diving, deer hunting, quad (ATV) riding, mountain biking, abseiling, zip lining, horse riding and trekking.

CLIMATE:
The local climate is tropical, modified by southeast trade winds; there is a warm, dry winter from May to November and a hot, wet, and humid summer from November to May. Anti-cyclones affect the country during May to September. Cyclones affect the country during November–April. Hollanda (1994) and Dina (2002) were the worst two last cyclones to have affected the island.

Mauritius is not far from the Capricorn. That means that the sun is longer at its highest point than anywhere else. We are a tropical island and it is very green here. For sure, there must be some rain coming down here as well… Usually in winter (means May to October) the highest temperatures vary between 20°C and 26°C in the coastal regions. In summer (November to April) it's slightly higher, meaning 26°C to 32°C .The water temperature of the Indian Ocean can go up to 28°C. Usually wind is blowing quiet steady from easterly directions. Important to know: Mauritius has a microclimate: it could rain cats and dogs where you are. Only a few kilometers away sun is shining and no cloud in sight. If you wake up in the morning with a gray sky, don't worry. Go for your shower, have breakfast and after the sky will be blue.

  • Summer is from November – April, the temperature is around 26. C on the coast & on the Central Pleatue all around 22.C
  • Winter is from May – October, the temperature is all around 22 .C, on the coast and on the Central Pleatue around 18.C
  • January – February is the warmest month 28.C. Lot of rainfall occur in this time & this is the period of cyclones & tropical storms.
  • The Sun shines approximately from five in the morning to seven in the evening Summer and winter from six in the morning to six in the evening.
  • July is consider the coolest month in the year, with a temperature around 21.C.

LANGUAGE:
The Mauritian Constitution makes no mention of an official language and its one million citizens speak mostly Mauritian Creole, a French-based creole, English and French. It is only in the Parliament that the official language is English, although any member of the National Assembly can still address the chair in French. However, English is generally accepted as the official language of Mauritius and as the language of government administration, the courts and business. The lingua franca is Mauritian Creole. In Mauritius, people switch languages according to the situation. French and English, which have long enjoyed greater social status, are favored in educational and professional settings. Mauritian Creole, which is spoken by the majority of the population, is considered to be the native language of the country and is used most often in informal settings. Slaves who used a pidgin language to communicate with each other as well as with their French masters, who did not understand the various African languages, developed it in the 18th century. The pidgin evolved with later generations to become a casual language.
Main language is Creole. The roots of Creole are in the French language, just skip some grammar and mix it with English, Arab, Indian and some African dialects.
Cultural language is French. Newspapers are published mostly in French and TV is showing most of the emissions in French.

Almost everybody understands English. It’s the business-language; almost all contracts and laws are in English.

Children are starting school with French and English.
Rather than BHOJPURI, TAMIL, MORISEYAN & URDU also speaks here.

CUISINE OF MALAYSIA:
Mauritian cuisine is very tempting and mouth watering. Food is an important part of Mauritian culture, playing a role in everyday life. Diversity is the keyword in the Mauritian cuisine, which consists of a mixture of Indian, European, Chinese cuisine. Once you try Mauritian food... you won't be able to give it up.
Mauritian cuisine is mix of Creole (African), Indian, French and Chinese cuisine. Hence starting from Creole rougailles, Indian curries and biryanis, Chinese chopsuey to French civet de lièvre, everything is a part of cuisine in Mauritius. The most basic and the common ingredient used in Mauritian recipes are the tomatoes, onions, ginger, garlic and chilies while the traditional base is definitely the curries and "rougailles" which is made from the common ingredient used in Mauritian recipes are the tomatoes, onions, ginger, garlic and chilies while the traditional base is definitely the curries and "rougailles" which is made from the blends of home crushed spices. Spices also constitute a major part of Mauritian cuisine. The extensive use of spices such as saffron, cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves provide a powerful, yet subtle flavor to the dish.
